In 1968, as now, space travel was viewed as a scientific and technological domain. As Lovell mused: “The loneliness out here is awe-inspiring … it makes us realise what you have back on Earth.” For Borman too it was “intensely emotional … We said nothing to each other, but maybe we shared another thought I had: ‘This must be what God sees.’” The Genesis reading This shot, revealing the Earth as a majestic but fragile oasis. A restored “Earthrise” photo, recently coloured by experts using the later shots as a reference, conveys the stunning sight beheld by the astronauts. But in the other camera was a much better shot, long ignored because it was in black and white. It was Anders who took the blurry, hastily framed, overexposed colour shot of Earthrise, later dubbed the image of the century. Then he and Lovell argued briefly over who should have the colour film camera, while Borman tried to calm them down. NASAĪnders quickly took a sharp shot of the Earth emerging above the lunar horizon. “Look at that picture over there! Here’s the Earth coming up,” Anders exclaimed.īill Anders’ first picture of Earthrise. When the key moment came, the astronauts were indeed taken by surprise, but not for long.Īnders was at a side window taking photos of craters using a camera with black and white film when he saw the Earth rise from behind the Moon. The official mission plan directed the astronauts to take photos of Earth, but only as the lowest priority. Nasa had intended for Apollo 8 to test the lunar module, but it was behind schedule so the mission didn’t take one.Īt the pre-launch press conference, Borman had looked forward to getting “good views of the Earth from the Moon” and Lovell to seeing “the Earth set and the Earth rise”. Dick Underwood explained: “I argued hard for a shot of Earthrise, and we had impressed upon the astronauts that we definitely wanted it.”īorman was joined on the mission by two other astronauts: Jim Lovell, who was the command module pilot, and Bill Anders, who had the title of lunar module pilot. There were, however, battles within Nasa about what images the astronauts should focus on, with the management insisting on shots of lunar geology and potential landing sites. The Apollo 8 crew presenting the Earthrise picture to the governor of Texas, John Connally, in 1969. The famous Earthrise picture, a wonky snap taken in a hurry, was improvised, but it had been anticipated. Detailed research I’ve conducted in Nasa’s archives has revealed more clearly how much planning lay behind these dramatic moments. But even if they were preoccupied, the astronauts knew it was coming.Īnother unforgettable event during the mission was a reading by the crew from the Book of Genesis, broadcast to the world at Christmas. However, the impact of Apollo 8’s “Earthrise” picture – the sight of the Earth from the Moon – now seems even greater than that of the first landing.įor many years, the story behind the famous Earthrise photo, was that the crew were caught off-guard by the blue orb rising from behind the Moon. It took place eight months before Apollo 11, where Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin explored the lunar surface for the first time. The recent death of Frank Borman, commander of Nasa’s Apollo 8 mission in 1968, has focused attention on that incredible first voyage to the Moon. Because of this, Jesus asserts that ‘…because you are lukewarm-neither hot nor cold-I am about to spit you out of my mouth…’ Through listening to this song, it is clear of Bart’s decision to ‘…give You the best of me…’ encouraging each of us in our Christian walk as we walk daily with Christ. Realising of how we can’t do things half-heartedly, we mustn’t become the lukewarm Christian spoken about in Revelation 3:16 that doesn’t stand for anything hot or cold. Complete with all its electronic distortion, Bart sings out ‘Best of Me’, asking God ‘…why would I want to try and meet you halfway? Why would I back down when there’s still fight in me?…’ as we understand his heart. ‘Best of Me’ and ‘You Don’t Care At All’ are alternative musical arrangements that fit right into an album that has stretched them lyrically and musically, creating an album exceeding The Generous Mr Lovewell quality-wise. Starting the album with a bang, MercyMe are determined to make this experience less about us, showing that God is our healer to our hurt. But then God comes along and we realise that ‘…you know better…’ and ‘…I’m not the one in control…’ and it is a sobering thought- that though I don’t have all the answers, God knows what we need, even if we don’t know ourselves. We know what is around the corner, and we can manoeuvre the events to suit the outcome we all desire. Starting off with opening song, ‘You Know Better’ Bart declares his intentions through the distorted guitar ‘…you think I know by now who’s running the show, and what really matters, but I keep picking a fight with letting go and keep getting hammered…’ This is a song of the struggle within us to let go the control that we so want to have, because it’s predictable. With lots of driving electric guitars and synths for fans of the rock genre, this is an album full of contemplative moments where you can sit back and let God minister to your soul. Their lead single and title track on the album is impacting airwaves since it released to radio in January and as lead singer Bart Millard explains the theme of the album in general, ‘…The Hurt & The Healer is a celebration of that moment when these two worlds collide: the deep need for healing and the God who provides it…’ The central theme of an album that is one of the most anticipated for 2012, MercyMe have created one of their most mature and lyrically profound of their career, with much musical experimentation to show that the album is one of the rockiest they have ever done. With top-charting melodies like ‘God With Us’, ‘All of Creation’, and ‘In the Blink of an Eye’ MercyMe are back with their highly-anticipated album, The Hurt and the Healer. MercyMe have written many stellar songs throughout their career, ever since their number 1 hit, ‘I Can Only Imagine’. The dab will form a thin film that should be left in place for several hours. If you have any questions, just ask on this thread so others that may have the same question can have it answered as well. I do wish they would have used an LED instead of an incandescent turn signal bulb up in the corner though. I really like how the LED DRL's flow with the IPL bumper, it's an aggressive but elegant look. It may not be perfect, but they seem to be built pretty well and the design is something new for the platform. This is the first company to offer a new design for our cars. I'm sure the headlight snobs out there will talk endless crap about them because they don't have and absolutely perfect cutoff and no chromatic aberration or whatever it is they like. Here's a couple of pictures I snapped with my phone of the lights in use outside: This seems typical for LED lights though. While they are extremely bright up close, they don't illuminate quite as far out as the Bi-Xenon solution that the original headlights provide. The high beams I have Hikari LED H7 units installed in place of the supplied halogens. I haven't been highbeamed by anyone either, so it doesn't seem to be a distraction to other drivers. The rectangles of light you see from the OEMassive headlights aren't really visible while driving. The first comparison shot is is low beam, and the second is high beam.Īs you can see, the light output isn't quite as clean as OEM. Top in each picture is OEM, and bottom is OEMassive. Here's one of the headlights installed showing the comparison of off, parking lights/DRL, low beams, and turn signal:Īnd of course the all important light output shots. Here's a quick comparison with one of the stock headlights: They also come with an instruction sheet that details how to swap the stock ballasts over to the new lights: They were well packed with expanding foam in individual boxes: I preordered a set of these lights, and after having them installed for the past few days I have decided to do a review of them. As many of you probably know, a company called OEMassive recently began selling an aftermarket headlight option for the G37 coupe. The previous version of this page was based upon a much older version of Inkscape, and was way out of date. My desire is to try to keep this page up to date with whatever the latest version is. I don’t expect there to be any massive changes between the release candidate and the final release. Version 1.2 is the future and the future will be here soon. Don’t worry about it being a “release candidate”, it’s been pretty stable since the alpha version. This crash course in Inkscape will be based on version 1.2 Release Candidate, which is easily accessible off of Inkscape’s official site. As of writing, I believe that Inkscape currently has the capacity to compete with any vector program in the market. Blender 3D is a true diamond in the open-source movement. But I decided to invest some time in learning Inkscape due to the hope that Inkscape will achieve the same level of polish and usefulness as Blender 3D. In the past, Inkscape has always felt clunky and like an afterthought on the Mac. I’ve always felt that Inkscape possesses a lot of untapped potential. And I’m the most efficient in that program.īut I am a fan of options. I’m the most comfortable using Illustrator. In fact, I’ve been using Adobe Illustrator for roughly 20 years. I’m a casual fan of Inkscape, but not a regular user. Useful Tools in the Inkscape’s Command Bar.I want to get you up and running, not bogged down in text. This tutorial is designed to quickly teach you the basics of Inkscape and start creating vector art with this free, open-source program. In this article, I am giving you a crash course in Inkscape (version 1.2 release candidate as of writing). Most don’t have kids or understand that you don’t have to backpack 25 miles in to where no man has set foot for a millennia in order to have an amazing time. We camped in North Pines for a week and had little to no set itinerary other than my brothers and I having Half Dome permits one day.Īt 5&7, I wouldn’t do Half Dome, but there’s plenty of other hikes and activities around to do. I did a trip about 3 years ago with my family (daughter was 6, and I have a wife with some moderate physical disabilities that make hiking nearly impossible) and my brothers family (nephews were 4 and 2). You might want to check out their family adventure packages though to Yellowstone or Alaska as those are specifically geared towards younger families. Too much time in a bus with kids who need to move and wiggle. Having read through your other comments, I saw the kids ages, and I wouldn’t recommend the western US tour. And yes, there’s shuttles in the park to get you around. Yarts goes there from Fresno and shuttles can be found from SF/Oakland too. Make sure you filter their premium (I think they’re called National Geographic now) tours, as the YOLO and 30 somethings tours are geared towards younger, budget conscience travelers, and the choice of accommodations shows. If you’re looking to do a bit more, I worked for GAdventures in Alaska years ago, and while there isn’t a Yosemite specific tour, there’s this tour from Vegas to San Fran that goes through Zions, Grand Canyon, Death Valley, Sequoia/Kings Canyon, and Yosemite over 2 weeks, and they have some other tours through Yellowstone/Grand Teton, Alaska and Canadian National Parks, as well as other continents. You can rent bikes up there too for the day and get to the more popular trail heads via the bike trails, or just cruise the valley floor. I know Greyhound and Amtrak can get you close, and there’s other private shuttle services I’ve heard of. From there, there are shuttle busses that run the loop of the valley, as well as up to Glacier Point (once the rehab project is done in a few years), Mariposa Groves, Tuolumne Meadows, and just about any other accessible by road areas with the exception of Hetch Hetchy. The Ahwahnee Hotel in the valley is a phenomenal hotel, and also the inspiration for the hotel in The Shining. |
